A series of 19 photographs © 2011 Pep Karsten - www.pepkarsten.com
Emy and Ana cannot live without each other. They are the same age but have a mother-daughter relationship. After an accident, they have to face the terrible situation of being separated.
Note: given the chronological nature of this series, it is important to view the photos in the order of their numbering.
Trying to maximise accessibility and immersion of the viewer, my photographic language and process are getting closer and closer to filmmaking. I first write a story, I then rewrite it as a script that I cut into scenes, meticulously built before the shootings. I intend to create a real narrative, temporality in the series. Finally, for the shootings, I am attended by a small crew in charge of location management, stage design, lighting, and specialised techniques (like underwater photography).
My work is focused on transcendence. I am currently exploring the theme of death in an optimistic perspective; What can the loved ones bring us after their demise? Can they help us transform our suffering into strength, into wisdom? Can we somehow extend their lives?
